Foundation work in San Diego
San Diego's Information Bulletin 501 (August 2026) prices a partial-foundation permit, meaning footings and slab on grade, at $5,479.50 for plan check with a $0.36 per square foot increment, and $2,922.40 for inspection with $0.24 per square foot. A City Standard retaining wall costs $1,677.99 in plan check and $353.13 in inspection for each 50 linear feet. One under 6 feet built from calculations is $2,207.58 and $529.71. Grading has its own bulletin.
IB 502 charges $10,863.96 to plan-check private grading of up to 5 sheets when a building is proposed, and a cut or fill that leaves a slope steeper than 25 percent (4:1) and 25 feet or more high needs a Site Development Permit. The city's Guidelines for Geotechnical Reports let some minor projects skip a soils report, though City review can ask for one on any project. A report stays valid three years unless the consultant sets a shorter date, and it must cover earthquake-induced ground failure, landslides and subsidence.
DSD's pages don't show a soft-story or brace-and-bolt retrofit program. Development Services takes every new permit online at aca.accela.com/SANDIEGO, and 619-446-5000 answers Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Booking each inspection is your job or your contractor's. Call 858-581-7111, or 619-446-5242 for grading, and look up your address on the state's EQ Zapp map to see whether a liquefaction or landslide zone touches it.

Permits for foundation repair work in San Diego
If San Diego has its own building department, start there and ask who issues permits for foundation, waterproofing and sump work.
The California Building Standards Code says no structure may be altered, repaired or improved without a permit from the building official, and CSLB adds that requirements vary by city and county. The building department for your address decides whether a given foundation, waterproofing or sump job counts.
