The permit statute, applied to a fan and a vent pipe
DBPR's list of contractor classes has no radon category. Read the class on the license record of any company you call.
Section 553.79 requires a permit to repair or alter a building, with an exemption under $7,500 that excludes electrical, plumbing and structural work and flood hazard areas. A system includes a fan on a power supply, so ask the office whether it files that wiring as electrical work.
Radon systems in Florida: our estimate and the wages behind it
An installed system is modeled at $875 to $1,975 per system, installed, from one national published range (1 counted) scaled by Florida's construction laborer wage ratio (0.87). It's an estimate, never a quote, and no Florida company price went into it.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $875 to $1,975 per system, installed | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida construction laborer wage ratio (0.86). One Florida foundation company publishes a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Construction laborer pay, Florida mean | $21.42 an hour | BLS May 2025 mean hourly wage in Florida for the occupation nearest to system-install crews; pay, not a price. |
| Construction laborer pay, US mean | $25.02 an hour | The all-states mean from the same BLS table, the divisor in the ratio. |

Radon system trouble that shouldn't wait
- The system fan has stopped and a warning gauge or alarm shows it.
- A vent pipe has cracked or come apart in the attic or crawl space.
- A fan or its wiring is hot to the touch or smells of burning.
- A fan that runs steadily with a gauge reading unchanged.
Before you hire for radon
- Ask which test result prompted the job and who ran the test.
- Ask where the vent will exit the house.
- Ask the building office whether the install needs a permit.
Permits for a radon system in Florida
Ask the building office about the fan wiring and the vent run at your address, because the $7,500 exemption doesn't cover electrical work.
DBPR has no foundation repair license category, so ask which state contractor license the company holds, look the number up on myfloridalicense.com and get its certificate of insurance before you sign anything.
